Robot (Re)Designs
Awww yeah - giant gangly robots!
Japanese giant robots from the ’70s have a pretty standard look. I broke away from a few of the classic design tenets in order to make these guys look more like robot versions of their rocker counterparts - most notably, I used a single colour from the waist on down so they kinda look like they’re wearing pants.
Giant robot pants!
I also established consistent design elements, like stripe usage and character-appropriate shapes (pointy vs. round), as well as limiting the entire colour scheme for both robots to the same four colours. Also, Vince usually poses asymmetrically and with a dynamic flair, whereas Les’ arms tend to move in unison and he behaves like more of a careening cannonball.
I think my favourite drawings here are the ones of them running. For some reason I have it in my head that Les is screaming about wanting mashed potatoes.
Les Expression Test
I love this little ball of fury, all thick and meaty… and hairy.
Please note his beautiful shirt from the old country - only in ’70s eastern Europe would a doily collar somehow find its way onto a shirt with racing stripe sleeves and be considered ‘Metal’.
Les Expression Test - Breakdown
Les’ construction was a bitch to nail down, but here you go - a beautiful, fat little metalhead from an unknown locale in eastern Europe.
Another found photo embodying the spirit of Vince and Les.
Vince Expression Test
Here’s one of our heroes, Vince - in all his Vince-y glory.
Please note his awesome leather headband, bells, and gauntlet.
Vince Expression Test - Breakdowns
If you’ve been following along, you might have noticed I’d gone a bit down the rabbit hole while obsessing over Vince’s motorcycle design.
Working out the construction of the boys’ vehicles will certainly have to be addressed at some point, but there are more pressing matters to attend to, ie: our heroes.
So here I turn my attention to Vince - breaking him down and nailing his look and construction.
The magic of a chopper lies in its details.
Here’re some little studies of bike parts to consider…

Robot Rampage
A little pre-production demo for my Bad Metal project.
Figured I should put the robots through their paces and see what they could do.
Vince’s bike is gonna need some skulls to spice it up a bit (duh).
Here’s a look at what skulls look like in the Bad Metal universe, as well as a few design rules to keep in mind…
Uh, yeah - I found this today, and this pretty much sums up Vince and Les.
Beautiful.
Okay, back to the sketches.
Here’s a quick study of Vince’s chopper.
The proportions still aren’t quite right. In my early design Vince’s bike looked too small, but this one looks a touch big.
That could work though - it is, after all, a bike delivered by Satan. It should feel like a bit of a monster…
